This turned out, rather unexpectedly, to be the hardest painting I've done. It's the first of this size, and has taken the longest. It's a prime example of a painting that I began based on a clear idea of what I wanted to do. There came the inevitable point when the painting began to have a life of it's own, and what it let me know about how it wanted to be didn't match my original idea much at all! I love the way this happens with any work, and how the process was particularly pronounced for this piece.
